Shalimar Gardens In Kashmir

Built by Emperor Jehangir for his wife Nur Jehan, Shalimar, 15 kms from the TRC, is a beautiful garden with sweeping vistas over gardens and lakes, and shallow terraces. The garden is 539 m by 182 m and has four terraces, rising one above the other. A canal lined with polished stones and supplied with water from Harwan runs through the middle of the garden. The fourth terrace, by far the best, was once reserved for royal ladies

The Shalimar Gardens is an example of Mughal gardens built by the Mughal emperor, Jahangir, in the lake city of Srinagar, which is the summer capital of the northernmost Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. It was built specially for his beloved and talented wife, Mehrunissa, titled Nur Jahan.

The gardens comprise four terraces, containing a canal supplied with water from the Harwan gardens nearby. The top garden, unseen from below, was reserved for the ladies of the court. The garden is considered to be very beautiful during the Autumn and Spring seasons due to the colour change in leaves and the blooming of flowers.

Covering an area of approximately 539 m by 182 m, the Shalimar garden offers an amazing view over the other gardens, lakes and shallow terraces. Also known as the "garden of love", the Shalimar Mughal Gardens has four terraces, rising one above the other. The fourth terrace of the garden was, at one point of time, reserved for royal ladies. There is also a canal lined with polished stones running through the center of the Shalimar Bagh. The canal is responsible for supplying water to the garden from Harwan
